What are the benefits of pet ownership?

Feb 10, 2022

Pet ownership offers benefits to both owners and pets, and those benefits can be grouped into three categories of benefits: 1) love and companionship, 2) discipline and routine, and 3) health and wellness.

The benefits of pet ownership are numerous, vast, and well studied and documented. These benefits generally fall into three main categories:

  1. Love and companionship
  2. Discipline and routine
  3. Health and wellness

The first category of benefits of pet ownership is all about the love, affection, and companionship you receive as the owner of a pet. No one is happier about you coming home than your dog that has been missing you. Whether it’s two weeks or two hours, the excitement they show when you arrive home can’t be beaten. If you’re looking for a companion to curl up with you on the couch and cuddle, your pet is often your go-to, as they’re experts in relaxing and cuddling.

The second category of pet ownership benefits arises from the needs your pet has in staying alive and healthy. They definitely can’t do this on their own, and need your intimate involvement and care. It requires discipline and routine to keep your pet his or her healthiest, especially dogs. Being fed at the same time, taking walks at the same time, getting treats and doing training at the same time every day. Discipline and routine is a great thing, and we could all use a little bit more of it in our lives I would imagine. A recent study with diabetic teens showed that caring for fish ultimately helped them better manage their own disease. Pet ownership can help us to eat healthier, exercise more often, take time to relax and just be ourselves. Having a pet that requires you to care for them is an amazing responsibility, and it is that … a responsibility. This responsibility shouldn’t be taken lightly, and it offers overwhelming benefits for those that do.

The third category of benefits of pet ownership is all about the health benefits that we derive from our pet, and is deeply intertwined with the first two categories as well. Having that constant love and affection is important in creating a safe environment for you and your pet, an important component of mental health and wellness. Studies have shown that pet ownership can reduce the feelings and the negative health impacts of loneliness and depression. Taking your dog for walks increases the natural exercise that you get and also increases socialization for you and your pet as you’re out and about in the community. Pet ownership helps reduce your overall stress on a day-to-day basis, which means you will live longer and lead a happier, healthier life overall.

Obviously here at 3poo1 we’re biased, but we believe the evidence is overwhelming: pet ownership has broad, long lasting benefits for us humans, and would encourage everyone who has the ability to care for a pet and has thought about doing it to do it immediately. There are hundreds of animals in shelters just waiting for you to come adopt them and give them their “forever home.” And we can assure you, you won’t regret it for one second. Your home will be full of joy and love, and you’ll be healthier and happier as well.
