Did you know that there are over 25 different breeds of dogs that are hypoallergenic, both purebreds and mixed breeds? Just because someone in your family is allergic to dogs no longer means that you can't have a pet dog in your house!

Here's a list of the dog breeds that are hypoallergenic:

And here is a list of all the mix breeds of dogs that are hypoallergenic:

What exactly does it mean to be a hypoallergenic dog? First off, hypoallergenic doesn't mean "allergy free" ... hypo in Greek means less or under, so hypoallergenic refers to "less allergies" rather than none. So hypoallergenic dogs are allergy free, but they produce significantly less allergic reactions to people who suffer from allergies to dogs.

When it comes to dog allergies, what are people actually allergic to? It's commonly believed to be dog hair or "dander" (shedding skin cells) but this isn't the case. Most dog allergies in humans are caused by a protein found in the saliva and urine of the dog, which is passed to their fur when they bath themselves. When they shed fur and dander, that's what causes the allergic reaction. The less shedding a dog does, then the less they pass these allergens around in the environment.  Thus all hypoallergenic dogs shed very little hair or dander.

Whether your dog sheds a lot or a little, or is hypoallergenic, they're all special and loved and deserve the best care possible.
